But my gut told me it wasn’t a leaky pipe. Because it’s a ghost! I nearly shouted. It was a ridiculous explanation, but I couldn’t shake it. The ghost of The Marvelous Melbourne was fooling with us. And as I looked at the tank, the shadows around it began to grow again. Whispers floated and bubbled through the air. The shadows took shape behind the tank. And the shape looked just like a person.

“That’s it,” I muttered. I stepped away from the tank. “I’m . . . sorry.”

“It’s OK, Jake,” Towers said.

“No . . . I’m sorry.” My chest began to squeeze, like my ribs were the teeth of a steel trap. “I can’t do this, Mr. Towers. I can’t help you out anymore.”

And as fast as my legs would carry me, I ran for the steps, for the lobby.

Even with Augustus Towers shouting after me in protest, I ran to escape.
